Hacienda Alsacia and the Espresso cloud IPA

October 21, 2016 by jocelyn Leave a Comment

National coffee day tasting; Hacienda Alsacia

I really wanted to do something special on National coffee day. Since I was in Sacramento, I made some vague plans with some friends to meet up at an evenings store to try the new Espresso Cloud IPA. As luck would have it, the third crop of Hacienda Alsacia was recently released in Japan, and one of my friends came to my rescue and sent me a bag.

This coffee has travelled the globe. From Costa Rica to Seattle, to Japan, to California. These are very special beans, and I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate them. A group of coffee masters getting together and talking about our shared passion and our love for the craft.

Cool beans, Cold brew

October 11, 2016 by jocelyn 2 Comments

cool beans, cold brewOver the past year I have been having so much fun with this blog, and connecting with partners all over the world. Something that I have been thinking about is having ‘guest bloggers’, coffee masters contributing their recipes and pairings. The idea that this blog, eventually, become a hub for coffee masters. Several months ago, one of my friends, Michelle, came up with a custom cold brew blend named cool beans, cold brew. Michelle is a talented artist and coffee master, so I knew she would be perfect to be the first guest blogger here.

And then life happened. To both of us. Michelle had some issues to deal with, and then suddenly I had to fly to California to be with my family. Coincidently, Michelle lives in Sacramento, which is very close to where my family lives, so instead of having a guest blogger, we got together and drank coffee together!…

Everything Matters

March 22, 2016 by jocelyn Leave a Comment

everything mattersAs we get closer to our move date (June 1st), my focus on creating recipes & pairings have shifted to full on clean and get ready to move mode. It is always stressful moving, but especially moving across the country, to a place we have never been. Very soon I’ll be slinging lattes in Michigan, but in the meantime, I am cleaning and organizing.

In this process, I found an old photocopy of a poster called ‘Everything Matters’. It must have been from some leadership meeting in the Bay Area, circa 2007? (just based off of the other papers it was with). The top of the poster had the logo evolution and a quote from Howard Schultz. Even with the outdated pictures and the typos, the message was strong and clear, and I decided to update it.

straybucks

In 10 years of working at Starbucks, I have come across many items in my lost and found. Mostly iphone chargers and earrings end up there, but I’ve seen laptops, houseplants, and just about anything you can imagine. Never once have I come across a lost kitten at Starbucks, but on my closing shift one night, I looked outside and there was this woman staring at me. I went outside and asked her if I could help her, and saw she had a tiny kitten. I gasped, and somehow I ended up taking this little guy home…

The word coffee originates from the Arabic word ‘qahhwat al-bun’ which was then shortened to ‘qahwa’. The Turkish called it ‘kahve’ after which the Dutch made it ‘koffie’, until it was finally translated to ‘coffee’ in English.
